Tomorrow morning I will leave my home before the sun rises to evaluate a newborn baby in the nursery. My children will not wake up until after I am gone. And Wednesday being my long day with ten hours of direct patient contact, my children will be asleep again before I get home.
My son will go to kindergarten, practice writing letters and numbers and hone social skills. My daughter will go to her sitter's house and draw beautiful creations and host pretend feasts. My wife will teach college students and challenge them to consider new and different thoughts.
I will treat hypertension, diabetes, ADHD and depression. I will reenforce wellness and encourage cessation of toxic habits. I will try to reflect to each patient how much I value them and their health.
Tomorrow night as tonight, I will pray that Donald Trump the man is different than Donald Trump the performer. I will pray for our country and our world. I will pray for my children's future.
And every day for the next four years, I will treat everyone the way I want to be treated. I will teach my children that hope is a more worthy aspiration than fear. I will teach my children to be respectful to everyone. My wife and I will work in any ways that we can to keep our home, our neighborhood, our city and our state a renewable community of inclusion.
There is no other choice but to continue making the choice for good on a minute to minute basis. There is no giving up. The victory is in the micro, if not the macro. The victory in the macro comes when there are no more sides.
