President-elect Trump tweeted very early this morning about the reprehensible offense of burning the American flag. Per the tweet:
Nobody should be allowed to burn the American flag - if they do, there must be consequences - perhaps loss of citizenship or year in jail!
So let's talk about my feelings on flag burning briefly.
1. I don't do it.
2. I think it's very disrespectful.
3. I understand why people who do become very upset about flag burning feel the way they do.
4. I understand that veterans especially may be extremely upset about flag burning given their sacrifice for our country and the added meaning of the flag to them.
5. When it comes to Americans burning flags, it's typically for the express purpose of upsetting those who would be upset about a flag burning. I think people who burn flags are assholes.
6. Veterans' sacrifices were to defend a Constitution which asserts everyone's right to be be an asshole and burn flags free from government coercion. The Constitution isn't a salad bar.
More than anything else, I cannot get past how much of a dead issue this is. As I texted Timmy the Tim today, "Bitching about flag burning is soooooooooooooooooooooo 80s". In that spirit, I offer some possible future concerns (? distractions) our President-elect may take on directly.
- Most likely secret Muslims: ALF, Todd Bridges, Andres Gallaraga, Andrew McCarthy, James Worthy
- Most likely crooked: Mother Teresa, Tiananmen Square tank protestor, Bob Geldof, Candice Bergen
- Most likely not a racist: David Duke
- Most likely a racist: Rue McClanahan, Blair Underwood, Dudley Moore, Ickey Woods
- Key issues facing the nation: Gays in the military (90s I know, but early 90s), gay cancer, Japan's economic dominance, Milli Vanilli lip-syncing
- Dregs of society: People who wear MC Hammer pants, people who wear Zubaz, people who wear Z Cavariccis
- Ideal cabinet appointees: Alex P. Keaton, Newt Gingrich
And remember, just because I'm giving him a chance doesn't mean I can't point out stupid.
