The final edition of Boers and Bernstein aired today on WSCR 670 the Score today in Chicago.  I am sad.

The hook of my personal story as a Boers and Bernstein listener is that I never tuned in while I lived in Chicago.  The very first day my wife and I moved in to our home in Wauwatosa (June 20, 2007) I noticed a little old-school kitchen cabinet radio bolted in just to the right of our kitchen sink.  I pressed the power button and turned the dial to see what kind of reception I might find and discovered that 670 came in clearly (as long as I didn't open the refrigerator door -- static!).  Moving only ninety miles from my native Chicago of childhood, adolescence and adulthood, I didn't think I would need an anchor to home.  But as I undertook four years of residency training, I need an anchor to sanity.

Terry Boers is goofy, irreverent and nihilistic.  Dan Bernstein is articulate, over-thought and arrogant. Together these two men channeled the inherent grating nature of sports talk radio into a self-propelled diversion machine filled with poignant conversation and farcical content.  For ten years,  Boers and Bernstein was my background noise to life and my escape from stress.  The show sparked thoughtfulness outside of medicine and engendered laughter independent of nervousness.  If asked to name my top ten favorite moments from the show, I don't think I could do it.  While there were highlights and low points, the show was more notable for its stability in my life.  The moments I remember most reflect more on my own life than on the show -- painting the kitchen in my house, holding my newborn son or holding my newborn daughter -- all while listening to the radio.

Terry Boers is retiring and Dan Bernstein is continuing.  I am excited for the next incarnation of the Score's afternoon show.  But as I consume today's final edition, I pause to connect ages twenty-seven and thirty-six and think that it's been a good ten years of listening.
