Newsweek re-post of a Mother Jones article on the 6th Great Extinction. I am really sad about giraffes being on the list. Giraffes are pretty much my favorite animal.
I get why some people consider zoos to be animal prisons. And someday I hope no animals need to be on display in very small artificial habitats. Labeling zoos as evil is unfair. Watch any zookeeper and you will see a person laboring in dedication and humility. Zoos are a haven, not an industry. Until the human race as whole stops taking from the planet more than it gives to the planet, zoos are vital and necessary to the protection of endangered species.
And as the parent of small children, the zoo is vital to my sanity. If you've ever gone to a zoo out of desperation to leave your home or distract your children, please donate.
