Senator Mitch McConnell refused to allow President Obama's nomination for the vacant Supreme Court seat, Judge Merrick Garland, to have a fair hearing before the Senate. McConnell argued that "the people should decide". Pretty savvy, letting the people decide. Quite political but savvy. Tying the presidential election even more than ever to a Supreme Court seat is a very efficient way to turn-out one issue voters in droves.
So now Donald Trump is President despite losing the popular vote by almost three million souls. Yes, yes, he won the Electoral College and thus he gets to be President. But the President of the United States is the only elected official who falls under the mandate of the Electoral College. So if we were truly to let the people decide who should be on the Supreme Court, by almost three million human decisions, Merrick Garland, your table is ready.
But that's not the country we live in. In our country, power is both the currency and the conscience and we are worse for it.
I will write that I hope whoever President Trump nominates, s/he gets a fair hearing and is confirmed or denied based upon her/his merits. At some point, a government has to govern.
