There are times when I really don't know what to write, but I feel that I should write something if for no other reason than I might look back on it some day to recall my thoughts (it's highly unlikely that someone else will look back at this or care about my thoughts).
My loved ones in Houston are not the ones that I am closest to, but I am thankful all the same that they are safe. My understanding is that they were extremely lucky and the water did not rise too high where they live in Houston proper.
A friend of ours has a sister, brother-in-law and nephews who lost everything. And my understanding is that flood insurance is not necessarily a thing in Houston and many other places.
I pretty much think that every first responder, member of the National Guard, Coast Guard member, helicopter pilot and bayou navy volunteer is a badass. As disconnected from this as I am, I'm thankful for their bravery and generosity of time and sweat. I'm not surprised by people helping other people. As cynical as I can be, I know that people are good deep down. I know that people, generally speaking, want to help others.
I know he took flack for many reasons, but I thought President Trump demonstrated decent leadership during this crisis. I don't care about his wife's shoes. He was wearing a hat because he has bad hair and he was going to be in windy and rainy conditions. There's so many pertinent criticisms to make of the President, there's no need to stretch.
Initial readings I've done on the topic suggest that there's not a direct relationship between Hurricane Harvey and climate change. I don't know if I believe that one. I'm frightened.
But not as frightened as the people living through this hell.
