In Star Wars: the Last Jedi the compelling conflict is the evil First Order bearing down on the remnants of the outgunned Resistance (soon to be the new Rebellion). The might of a terrible armada leisurely spies a few ragged ships left with no strategy but to skirt weapons range while expending its last fuel reserves. Personal death and holocaust writ large just hours, minutes, seconds away.
The physics of this chase are questionable. But now at the very beginning, we must agree to a willing suspension of our disbelief. The plot is compelling all the same. The particular contrivance of endless chase at the hands of one's mortal enemy is explored more tensely (and thus more effectively) in the reboot Battlestar Galactica episode "33" if you're interested.
Precept 2: The practical Jedi is humbled by living. Every day is a good day because a bad day is not compatible with life. The practical Jedi does not dwell on the bitterness of a cold winter night but reflects on the gift of the furnace, the hearth, the coat or the blanket. The practical Jedi appreciates the shade rather than decry the blistering sun. Life is a gift that cannot be self-insured. Many things must go right on a daily basis for it to be preserved.
