captain's log

Work continues on building a practice.  Day in and day out I am humbled by the amount of problems and perceived problems that patients bring to my clinic.  Despite an ever-encroaching cynicism, I try to always remember that I bill myself as a healer and this goes with the territory.  Am I good at what I do or do I talk a good game?  I also hold on to the belief that patients who present to my clinic with these endless problems nominally seek to get better.

On the homefront the new recruits continue to progress.  Recruit One is out of diapers and Recruit Two is in bigger diapers.  I am endlessly fascinated by the curiosity, wonder and innocence of these newcomers.  I seek every day to find patience to bring them along, which is less an indictment of the recruits than it is of their captain.  Still they remain the great joy of my life.

My Executive Officer continues to thrive.  We have started a new policy of each Senior Officer relieving the other for two hours per day which has allowed for a time of quiet reflection or simply quiet.  Research, development and creativity have definitely improved with this approach.  The struggle is to balance these alternating shifts with some overlapping time online.

For myself, I notice that I am exercising more briefly and more often at home for the sake of convenience.  These days every minute seems precious.    And most unexpectedly, I find myself slowing going through the free episodes of Star Trek: Voyager on the internet.  Never my favorite series, I am giving the show another try.  My attention is captivated by the premise of being stranded 75,000 light years from home with a fully loaded starship:  engines, medical personnel and food.  And with an immediately built-in quest to return home -- a built-in purpose.    My mind drifts and I think to myself, if I could be stranded 75,000 light years from home in a fully loaded starship (provided the ExO, the Recruits and Crewman Canine were with me), I probably would not complain.
