My son and I started swim class tonight. 5th straight semester.
Two years ago, dude couldn't do an arm circle to save his life, freaked out with any attempt at floating and took six weeks of coaching to do a single jump. Blowing bubbles was like seeing a rated-R movie for the first time.
Now he's the oldest kid in the class, just doing time before he's old enough to start parentless swim lessons in January. I barely stabilize him when he dashes after toys in the water. He chastises me if I stand too close to the wall during jumps at the end of class.
No cliches about stopping growth or waste-basket interrogatives about the progression of time. My life is not challenged by war, poverty, famine or threat of bodily harm. I am so fortunate. I have the luxury to dwell in these most prideful banks in the river. William Blake, Harry Chapin, etc., etc.
